What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of making your business easy for AI answer tools, such as ChatGPT and Google’s AI Overviews, to find, understand and name when someone asks a question. It uses much of the same work as SEO, and Google’s own guide calls optimizing for generative AI search “still SEO.”

By Donnie Strompf. Updated October 2026.

Key takeaways

  • AEO means answer engine optimization. Google’s July 10, 2026 guide says AEO and GEO are terms for work focused on visibility in AI search, and that this work is still SEO.
  • AEO and GEO cover much of the same work. eMarketer wrote on April 2, 2026 that no common taxonomy exists and that AEO and GEO describe the same underlying approach in practice.
  • Microsoft’s guide heads the term “Answer/Agentic Engine Optimization (AEO),” so check which meaning a vendor intends.
  • The two search studies below measure different things. AI Overviews correlate with fewer clicks on the top result, while chatbots send a small share of web traffic.
  • No fee buys a guaranteed place in an AI answer, and the sources an AI tool cites keep changing.

What does answer engine optimization mean?

AEO stands for answer engine optimization. eMarketer defined it on April 2, 2026 as “structuring content so it gets extracted and surfaced as a direct answer in AI-driven interfaces.” An answer engine is a tool that writes a response to your question and shows sources, instead of listing links for you to open. Perplexity’s help center says each of its answers includes numbered citations linking to the original sources.

The goal is for an AI tool to name your business and link to your page when a buyer asks “who is the best [your service] in [your city].” I’m Donnie Strompf, I’ve done SEO since 2008, and I read that job as the old one in a new place. Buyers always asked questions, and the answer now arrives as a paragraph with a few links.

Is AEO the same as SEO?

Mostly, and Google says so. Its guide, “Optimizing your website for generative AI features on Google Search” (last updated July 10, 2026), says AEO stands for answer engine optimization and GEO for generative engine optimization. It then says “optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO.”

The main difference is how success is measured. eMarketer quotes Kelsey Voss: “SEO is about ranking pages for clicks, while GEO is about being selected as a source in synthesized answers.” Here is how SEO and AEO compare.

What does success look like?Your page ranks in a list of results and gets clicked.Your business is named or linked inside a written answer.
Where does it show?Search results pages and the map pack.AI answer tools such as ChatGPT and Google’s AI Overviews.
What does it depend on?A crawlable, indexed site with useful pages. The same site, plus pages and listings that answer a question directly.
What can you control?Your site, your content and your listings. The same things. You cannot control which sources a tool picks.
How do you check results?Rankings, plus impressions and clicks in Search Console.Asking the tools your buyers’ questions, plus Google’s Generative AI performance report in Search Console.

If your site has indexing problems, fix those first. Google’s AI features documentation (last updated December 10, 2025) says a page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet to be a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Our SEO services page covers that groundwork, and the SEO fundamentals guide explains it in order.

How do AEO and GEO differ from the other terms?

eMarketer wrote that “No common taxonomy exists for this category” and that agencies and specialists use several overlapping names for the same tactics. The table records how each term is used and where the usage comes from.

The GEO paper by Pranjal Aggarwal and five co-authors introduced GEO as a framework for improving content visibility in generative engine responses. It is a research paper, and it sets no standard for what a vendor should deliver.

Microsoft Advertising’s guide, “From Discovery to Influence: A Guide to AEO and GEO” (blog post dated January 6, 2026), heads the term “Answer/Agentic Engine Optimization (AEO)” and uses “Answer Engine Optimization” in its executive summary. The definition begins with optimizing content for AI agents and assistants. If a vendor sends you an AEO proposal, ask which meaning it uses.

Google and eMarketer both treat the two as the same approach, so this page uses AEO. Our AEO services page covers the service.

How much traffic comes from AI answers?

Ahrefs reported in a May 15, 2026 study that AI chatbots sent 3.5 million visitors in March 2026, which was 0.28% of web traffic across 74,752 websites. Ahrefs notes that some chatbot visits show up as direct traffic, so the true share may differ.

In a separate February 4, 2026 update, Ahrefs found that an AI Overview correlates with a 58% lower average click-through rate for the top-ranking page. That study compared December 2023 with December 2025 across 300,000 keywords. One figure is about referrals from chatbots and the other is about clicks on search results, so they do not add together.

Referral counts leave out a buyer who reads an answer and searches your name later, so treat them as a floor.

Being named can still happen without a click. On October 15, 2026, Komba Jiu Jitsu was the first recommendation on ChatGPT and Perplexity for a beginner looking for a jiu jitsu academy near Sunrise or Plantation, and second on Gemini for the best gym in Sunrise. That is a single-day snapshot, and it does not predict next month.

What does AEO work involve?

Start with what the companies publish. OpenAI’s ChatGPT search help article says ChatGPT rewrites a question into one or more targeted queries, ranks results on several factors, and may include citations. It also says a site becomes eligible by allowing its OAI-SearchBot crawler. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode may issue “multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources.”

Google’s July 2026 guide also says what to skip. It tells site owners to prioritize effective SEO over “AEO/GEO hacks” such as chunking content into tiny pieces, creating AI text files and seeking inauthentic mentions. It recommends non-commodity content, meaning content that offers unique expert or experienced takes that go beyond common knowledge.

For the step-by-step plan, see our guide on how to get recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews, which covers crawler access, local listings and a one-week plan.

Do I need AEO?

Start with two questions: do your buyers ask AI tools for recommendations, and what is holding your visibility back today? The table matches common situations to a first move.

AEO is sold alongside SEO at $950 to $2,000 a month, and the SEO baseline is $1,000 to $1,600 a month. Both are on the pricing page, reviewed October 2026. The cost side has its own guide: How much AEO costs. If the one-week plan in our guide covers what your business needs, do that and skip the retainer.

What can no one promise about AEO?

No one can promise placement. OpenAI says it is not guaranteed, and Google says indexing and serving are not guaranteed. eMarketer reported that between 40% and 60% of cited sources change month to month across Google AI Mode and ChatGPT. The sentence links to a Search Engine Land explainer, which is the only attribution eMarketer gives for the figure.

That is why a claim like “page one of ChatGPT in 30 days” should end the conversation. Ask any provider which questions it will test, which tools it will test them in, how it saves each answer and URL, and what it does when a source disappears. If a provider cannot explain how it tests and records AI answers, ask what the monthly fee covers.

FAQ

What does AEO stand for?

AEO stands for answer engine optimization. Google’s July 2026 guide and eMarketer both use that expansion. Microsoft’s guide heads the term “Answer/Agentic Engine Optimization,” so confirm which sense a proposal or report intends when it uses the acronym, because the agentic sense centers on AI agents and assistants.

Is AEO the same as GEO?

In practice, yes. The difference is mostly wording. AEO centers on being extracted as a direct answer. GEO centers on being cited or recommended. If a vendor sells them as two separate services, ask what work differs between them, because the tactics overlap.

Is AEO replacing SEO?

Google’s position is that SEO still matters. Its guide answers “Is SEO still relevant?” with a yes and calls generative AI optimization “still SEO.” Google’s AI features sit on its core ranking and quality systems, so a site that Google cannot index has little chance of appearing in those answers either.

Do I need an llms.txt file or special schema for AEO?

For Google, no. Its guide says Search ignores AI text files and that no special schema.org markup is needed for generative AI features. It still recommends structured data for rich results. Other tools may read other files, so treat any file as optional extra work and not a fix.

How can I tell whether AI tools mention my business?

Ask each tool the questions your customers ask, then write down which businesses and links appear. Repeat monthly, because cited sources shift. For Google’s own AI features, Search Console has a dedicated Generative AI performance report. The free audit page covers the rest.

How much does AEO cost?

Our published range for AEO is $950 to $2,000 a month, added to an SEO plan. Within that range, the price depends on your market and how much content needs work. Ask any vendor for its monthly figure in writing before you commit, and compare it with the services it lists.

Can anyone guarantee that ChatGPT will recommend me?

No. Which sources ChatGPT picks is its own decision, and a vendor sees no more of that process than you do. A safer purchase is work you can inspect, such as site access, page rewrites and listing fixes. Treat any guarantee as a reason to ask what happens if the promise is missed.
