Can you pay to be recommended by ChatGPT or Google AI answers?

You can pay to have an ad shown in ChatGPT and in Google’s AI features, but no page I read lets you pay to be recommended inside the answer itself. As of October 15, 2026, OpenAI says its ads do not influence answers, and Google’s AI features page describes no payment route.

By Donnie Strompf. Updated October 2026.

Key takeaways

  • OpenAI says ads in ChatGPT appear below the response, are labeled sponsored, and “do not influence ChatGPT’s answers.”
  • ChatGPT’s Ads Manager is a beta. OpenAI’s help pages list a minimum daily budget of USD 25 and say there are no performance benchmarks yet.
  • Google shows ads above, below and sometimes within AI Overviews, and is testing new ad formats in AI Mode. Advertisers cannot opt out of AI Overview ads or pick where they show.
  • No page I read from OpenAI or Google describes a fee that buys a place in the organic answer. Earned mentions still depend on crawlable pages and accurate listings.
  • Test paid placement only after Google Ads and conversion tracking work, with a capped budget and a stop date.

Who is writing this and when it was checked

I’m Donnie Strompf, and I lead SEO strategy at Good At Marketing, an agency in Boynton Beach, Florida. I read the OpenAI and Google pages cited here on October 15, 2026. The OpenAI Help Center pages I read show only a relative “updated” label, such as “5 days ago”, so treat every detail as true on that date only.

The unpaid side is covered in our guide to getting recommended by ChatGPT and AI Overviews.

What can you pay for in ChatGPT and Google AI answers?

You can pay for ads that sit beside or below AI answers. The table shows where.

Google AI Mode adsTests and pilotsConversational Discovery ads and Highlighted Answers are in testing, labeled Sponsored (Google, May 20, 2026).
Gemini appNot announcedGoogle’s VP of Global Ads, Dan Taylor, wrote on December 8, 2025 that there were no ads in the Gemini app (Search Engine Land). On April 29, 2026, Google’s Philipp Schindler said on the Alphabet Q1 call that AI Mode formats could transfer to the Gemini app and that Google was “not rushing anything.” I found no Google policy page on Gemini app ads.

“No payment route found” means the pages I read describe none. It does not prove that none exists.

How do ChatGPT ads work for a small business?

OpenAI says it began testing ads in the United States on February 9, 2026. PPC Land reported on May 5, 2026 that OpenAI opened a self-serve Ads Manager beta to US businesses with cost-per-click bidding. OpenAI’s January 16, 2026 advertising principles say advertisers cannot influence answers or access private conversations.

Who sees adsFree and Go users. Plus and Pro accounts and all workplace and school plans do not, and neither do accounts identified as under 18 (Ads in ChatGPT).Your ad will miss paid-plan users.
TargetingAds are chosen for relevance using the conversation, your landing page, your copy and “context hints,” which are not exact-match keywords and do not guarantee delivery (The Basics). You cannot pick the questions that trigger your ad.
LocationTargeting can go down to the city or postal code where available (Create campaigns). You can target a city or postal code, but you cannot force an ad to appear for a particular question.
BidsViews (CPM), clicks (CPC) or conversions. OpenAI suggests starting CPC campaigns at a maximum bid of $3 to $5 (The Basics).Compare that with your Google Ads cost per click first.
BudgetMinimum daily budget of USD 25. A daily budget is a seven-day average, and one day can reach 2 times it (Create campaigns).OpenAI calls the campaign-total budget the stricter cap.

ResultsOpenAI’s FAQ says there are no benchmarks yet across advertisers, industries or campaign types. No one can quote you a normal cost per lead.

OpenAI says ads are not shown near personal health, mental health or political conversations, and political advertising is not allowed.

For measurement, OpenAI’s conversion measurement page describes a Pixel and a Conversions API that report actions after an ad click. It warns that totals can differ from your analytics tool.

OpenAI’s September 16, 2026 announcement added Sponsored Agents, which are chats with a business’s AI representative, for select US advertisers. Its help page calls the format a limited alpha with early access closed.

Where does Google show ads in AI Overviews and AI Mode?

Google’s Ads Help page says ads can show above or below an AI Overview in all of the more than 200 markets where AI Overviews are available. Ads within an AI Overview are limited to certain markets, in English, in the United States and 11 other countries. Google lists four campaign types as eligible for the spots above and below, and three for ads within.

Advertisers cannot target AI Overview placements or opt out, and Google offers no segmented reporting for ads shown within them. Google excludes sensitive verticals, including healthcare and finance, from ads within AI Overviews. For ads inside an AI Overview, it says both the user’s query and the content of the AI Overview are considered.

For AI Mode, Google’s May 20, 2026 post names two formats in testing, Conversational Discovery ads and Highlighted Answers. It says Business Agent for Leads, a chat agent inside the ad, arrives “in the coming months.” It gives no countries, exact launch dates or prices.

Search Engine Land’s October 9, 2026 explainer, which is trade press and not Google, says most of these formats are tests or pilots. It adds that AI Mode has no separate campaign type, you cannot choose its placements, and reporting does not isolate its results.

Should a small business test ChatGPT ads?

I would consider a ChatGPT test only in the situations marked below. This is my advice, and no published results prove it.

Your situationSuggested first moveReason
No Google Ads account runningStart with Google Search ads. See Google Ads management.Google ads already run around AI Overviews, and ChatGPT’s tool is a beta without benchmarks.
Calls and form fills are not trackedFix tracking before any paid testA conversion campaign needs events to measure.
Google Ads pays back and you have a test budgetRun one capped ChatGPT testYou have a cost per lead to compare against.
Health, finance or legal servicesRead both platforms’ sensitive-topic rules firstOpenAI avoids health conversations, and Google excludes healthcare and finance inside AI Overviews.
You hope ads will get you named in answersDo not buy ads for that purposeOpenAI says ads do not influence its answers, and no Google page I read says paid ads change organic AI answers.

If you run a test, set it up this way:

  1. Set a campaign-total budget you can lose. At USD 25 a day for 30 days, the minimum comes to $750 of budget.
  2. Pick one result to count, such as a booked call, and send clicks to a page built for it.
  3. Choose a stop date before launch, and compare cost per lead with Google Ads on the same page.
  4. Allow OAI-AdsBot, and open the account in your own name.

OpenAI has published no benchmarks, so I cannot give you a reliable cost-per-lead estimate or a timeline.

What does paying not buy, and what earns a mention?

No page I read says paying buys a recommendation inside the answer, a spot among the cited sources, or any promise that the AI will name you. OpenAI says ads do not influence ChatGPT’s answers. The Google pages I read are silent on whether ads affect organic AI answers, so that question stays open.

For unpaid visibility, OpenAI’s search help page says a site must let OAI-SearchBot crawl it, and Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. Our AEO services page covers that unpaid work, and the SEO pillar guide covers the base under it. A ChatGPT ad replaces neither.

What does this cost with an agency?

Our pricing page lists Google Ads management at $600 to $1,000 a month, with ad spend paid to Google on top. The cost side has its own guide: How much AEO costs. AEO services run $950 to $2,000 a month alongside SEO. Prices reviewed October 2026. Ad spend for a ChatGPT test is billed by OpenAI (billing page).

What is still unknown?

  • Results. OpenAI says no benchmarks exist, and I found no independent study of small-business cost per lead.
  • Organic effects. OpenAI says ads and answers are separate, and the Google pages I read are silent on it. I found no independent test of whether advertising changes organic mentions, so treat that as unverified.
  • Google AI Mode ads. The May 20, 2026 post gives no countries, exact launch dates or prices.
  • Gemini app. Google has announced no ads there, and its April 29, 2026 earnings-call remarks leave the door open.
  • Dates. OpenAI’s help pages show relative dates, so recheck before committing budget.

FAQ

Does buying ChatGPT ads make ChatGPT mention my business in its answers?

OpenAI says it does not. Its help page states that ads run on systems separate from the chat model, and that advertisers cannot shape, rank or alter responses. The ad appears as a labeled unit under the reply. Whether the reply names your business depends on what ChatGPT retrieves.

Can I choose which ChatGPT conversations show my ad?

Not directly. Selection runs on OpenAI’s own relevance judgment, and the hints you supply only nudge it. Because delivery follows relevance and bids, two campaigns with the same budget can reach very different volumes. Judge a test by leads and cost per lead, and treat impressions as a by-product.

Can my agency set up my ChatGPT Ads account for me?

Possibly. OpenAI’s Advertising Terms, updated August 25, 2026, let a customer act on behalf of an advertiser. Even so, keep the account in your business’s own name, so you hold the login and the billing relationship. Ask any agency whether it has run a ChatGPT campaign, and what happens to access if you part ways.

Can I opt out of Google ads in AI Overviews?

Not according to Google’s Ads Help page. What you control is eligibility: the page ties these ads to campaign type and recommends AI-powered targeting such as broad match, AI Max or Performance Max. Because there is no separate report for them, judge any effect through overall campaign results and lead counts.

How should I measure a ChatGPT ads test?

Count one outcome you already track, such as a booked call, and read OpenAI’s Pixel or Conversions API results beside your own analytics. OpenAI says totals can differ between tools because of attribution windows and modeled reporting. Decide beforehand which number counts, and write it down.

Will ChatGPT show my ad to everyone I want to reach?

Probably not. Only part of ChatGPT’s audience can see ads, so the useful question is whether your buyers sit in that part. Ask recent customers which assistant they used and whether they pay for it. The OpenAI pages I read give no audience breakdown by industry or city, so a small poll is your best early evidence.
