How to track ChatGPT traffic in Google Analytics 4 and Search Console

To track ChatGPT traffic in Google Analytics 4, open Reports, Acquisition, Traffic acquisition and look for chatgpt.com in Session source / medium. OpenAI says ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral URLs. Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode are reported separately, as impressions, in Search Console.

By Donnie Strompf. Updated October 2026.

Key takeaways

  • OpenAI documents one tag for ChatGPT visits, utm_source=chatgpt.com. Google’s custom channel groups page names Claude and Perplexity as AI assistants, and the vendor pages I read for Perplexity, Gemini and Claude document no referral tag.
  • Google’s default channel group lists an AI Assistant channel, and a custom channel group can catch the sources it misses.
  • Visits that arrive without a referrer land in Direct, so GA4 counts are a floor.
  • Search Console’s Generative AI performance report covers AI Overviews and AI Mode with impressions, and Google’s help page for it mentions no clicks.
  • Compare AI sessions with your key events, such as form submissions and calls, because the counts are small.

How much traffic comes from AI engines?

A small share. Across the client sites we track, AI engines sent 0.36% of all sessions in the six months to October 14, 2026. ChatGPT was 83% of that traffic (source: GA4, read 2026-10-15).

The Ahrefs study (byline May 15, 2026) measured about 0.28% of web traffic for March 2026. Our guide to answer engine optimization puts both figures in context.

The share is small, and it still produces results. MBMI’s site recorded 209 sessions and 12 key events from AI engines in the six months to October 14, 2026. That is a client snapshot, and it does not predict the next six months for your site.

What can GA4 and Search Console tell you about each AI source?

GA4 needs source information to identify where a visit came from. Without it, the visit may appear as Direct. I’m Donnie Strompf, and I’ve done SEO since 2008. I read each page cited below on October 15 and 16, 2026.

Pages read for the table. Google’s help pages show no date unless one is given here.

How do you find ChatGPT sessions in GA4?

Use Google’s Traffic acquisition report to find ChatGPT sessions. Use an exploration to see their landing pages.

  1. Open Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition.
  2. Set a date range long enough for small counts to add up.
  3. Use the dimension selector above the first column to switch from Session default channel grouping to Session source / medium. Google lists both as dimensions of this report.
  4. Search the table for chatgpt. A row such as chatgpt.com is your ChatGPT traffic, tagged by the utm_source value.
  5. Switch back to Session default channel grouping and look for an AI Assistant row.

Step 4 may show a medium of (not set). Google’s URL builder help says missing UTM parameters produce (not set) values in reporting, and the OpenAI FAQ mentions only utm_source.

For landing pages, build a free-form exploration. Google’s Explorations help says to add dimensions and metrics from the Variables column and that you can filter on dimensions. Put the source in the filter, a landing-page dimension in the rows and sessions plus key events in the values.

Does GA4 have an AI channel built in?

Google’s default channel group page lists an AI Assistant channel for users arriving “from sources like ChatGPT, Gemini, Deepseek, Copilot, or Grok.” The medium must exactly match “ai-assistant,” which Analytics sets when the referrer matches a list of AI assistants. The channel excludes Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, which Google files under Organic Search.

Search Engine Journal reported on May 14, 2026 that the change is automatic and that Google has not published the full referrer list. Look for the row in your own Traffic acquisition report and compare it with your chatgpt.com row.

How do you build a custom channel group for AI traffic?

If your Referral rows show AI sources missing from the AI Assistant channel, add them to a custom channel group. Google’s custom channel groups page includes an AI assistants example and lists five popular assistants, including Claude and Perplexity.

  1. In Admin, under Data display, click Channel groups. You need the Editor role or above at the property level.
  2. Create a new channel group, or edit an existing one, and add a channel named “AI assistants.”
  3. Add a new condition, select “matches regex” and enter a regex matching the AI assistant URLs you want to include. Google’s example does not name the dimension, so pick the source dimension that fits your reports.
  4. Reorder the channels. Google says traffic goes into the first channel whose definition it matches, and the example places AI Assistants above Referrals.
  5. Click Save channel, then Save group.

Ahrefs publishes this starting regex for a GA4 segment, covering chatgpt.com, perplexity, gemini.google.com, copilot.microsoft.com, openai.com, claude.ai, deepseek.com and huggingface.co:

.*chatgpt.com.*|.*perplexity.*|.*gemini.google.com.*|.*copilot.microsoft.com.*|.*openai.com.*|.*claude.ai.*|.*deepseek.com.*|.*huggingface.co.*

Ahrefs calls it a workable baseline that “won’t catch everything.” Compare the domains with the source values in your own property before you rely on it.

Why does AI traffic look smaller in GA4 than you expect?

Google defines Direct as users arriving “via a saved link or by entering your URL,” with a source of (direct) and a medium of (not set) or (none). Ahrefs says some chatbot visits “will still appear as direct, particularly from mobile apps.” Search Engine Journal adds that sessions without a referrer header still land in Direct. The OpenAI FAQ ties its tag to ChatGPT search results and does not mention apps.

What do Search Console and Bing show about AI answers?

Google’s Generative AI performance report covers AI Overviews and AI Mode. Its one metric is impressions, meaning how many times links to your site were shown in a generative AI feature. You can break it down by page and by country, and filter by Web text-based or Web multimodal search. Google says the report may not appear if your site has had too few impressions.

Google’s AI features page (last updated December 10, 2025) adds that sites in these features are included in the overall search traffic in Search Console, under the Web search type. It says you could also track conversions and time spent on your site in tools such as Google Analytics. For general report basics, see our Search Console tips.

Microsoft’s February 10, 2026 announcement describes an AI Performance report in public preview. It lists total citations, average cited pages, grounding queries (a sample of citation activity) and page-level citation counts across Microsoft Copilot, AI summaries in Bing and select partners. It does not mention clicks.

Are AI visitors worth having?

Check whether they submit a form, call or complete another key event. Google’s key events help defines a key event as an event that measures an action that is particularly important to the success of your business. Mark your form submissions and calls first, so the AI rows have something to compare. For wider conversion tracking, see our guide to measuring content marketing ROI.

What should a monthly AI traffic report show?

Ask for these items, each with its date range:

  • Sessions by AI source, with the channel group or regex used.
  • The landing pages those sessions reached.
  • Key events from AI sessions, shown beside other channels.
  • A note on Direct traffic that cannot be attributed.

Who owns the Analytics property matters too. Our guide on who owns your marketing accounts explains how to give an agency access without giving up ownership. For the work that earns the mentions, see our guide to getting recommended by ChatGPT and AI Overviews and our comparison of how AI search engines choose sources. FAQ

Will a channel group I create today change my past reports?

Google says custom channel groups can be applied to reports retroactively, so a late setup still covers earlier months. Two limits apply: a standard property can hold 2 custom groups, and custom groups do not appear in the BigQuery export schema. Plan the group before you use up a slot.

Who should hold the Editor role on my GA4 property?

Your business should own the property and give an agency the lowest role that lets it work. Google describes Editor as full control of property settings without user management. Ask who holds Administrator today and whether two people at your company do. The ownership guide linked above has the steps for each Google tool.

Does blocking OAI-SearchBot affect ChatGPT tracking?

OpenAI’s FAQ says publishers who allow OAI-SearchBot can track referral traffic from ChatGPT. A site that blocks the crawler may not appear in ChatGPT search results at all, which leaves little traffic to track. Our page on AI crawlers, robots.txt and llms.txt covers which bots to allow.

How long should I wait before judging AI traffic?

Use at least six months of data when counts are low. A month with 5 sessions swings by 100% when 5 more arrive. Keep the same date range each time and write down any change to your channel group or tagging, so a jump in the numbers has a known cause.

Does a low ChatGPT count mean my business is not being recommended?

Not necessarily. Referral counts leave out a buyer who reads an answer and searches your name later. Analytics also cannot show what an answer said. Keep a dated log of prompt tests, with the engine, the exact wording and the answer, and read it beside the GA4 numbers.

Can I tell which Search Console clicks came from AI Overviews?

Google’s help page for the Generative AI performance report describes impressions only. Clicks from AI features sit inside the overall Web search totals. Watch the click trend on pages that appear in the report, and treat a change after a page edit as a lead worth testing.
