Content marketing and SEO for a local business come down to one job: publishing pages that answer what nearby buyers search for, and making sure Google can find and trust them. Content supplies the pages. SEO decides which pages to write and gets them seen. You need useful pages and a site Google can find and understand.

This post replaces the May 2026 version. I’m Donnie Strompf, and I work from Boynton Beach, Florida. The examples below come from South Florida, and the method applies to any city.
What each one does for a local business
SEO is the work that makes a site findable. It covers keyword research, how the site is organized and how fast it loads, plus your Google Business Profile and links from other sites. Content marketing is the pages themselves: service pages, city pages and guides that answer buyer questions. Our SEO services and content marketing services pages describe how we sell each one.
Technical SEO alone does not answer the questions customers search for. A site full of good pages that Google cannot crawl, or that load slowly on a phone, never reaches the people who would call. The SEO guide to how it works covers the fundamentals in more depth.
Which pages a local business needs
Start with the questions customers ask when they are ready to hire or compare options, and give each page one of them. The table shows the page types worth building first, with example searches for a South Florida air conditioning company.
| Searcher | Page that answers it | Example search |
|---|---|---|
| Ready to hire, names a service and a place | A service page for that city | “AC repair Boynton Beach” |
| Comparing prices | A cost page with a range you can defend | “cost to replace a 3-ton AC in Palm Beach County” |
| Researching before buying | A guide | “how long does a new AC unit last in South Florida” |
| Choosing between providers | A page with your reviews, answers to common objections and your service area | “best AC company near Delray Beach” |
A post titled “5 Tips for Choosing a Plumber” fits none of these. That title says nothing about your service or your location, so Google has little to match it to. If you cannot state a price range for a cost page, say what drives the price and invite the call instead of guessing.
Before you write a page, type its search into Google and look at who ranks. If national publishers fill the first page, look for a narrower local search by adding the service, the city or the situation.
How Google decides local results
Google’s Business Profile help explains local results with three factors: relevance first, then distance, then prominence. Relevance is how well your listing matches the search. Distance is how far you are from the searcher. Prominence is how well known you are, and Google says more reviews and positive ratings can help.
You have little control over distance, so put the effort into relevance and prominence. Pages written around buyer searches raise relevance. Reviews and links from local sites raise prominence. Google also says businesses with complete and accurate information are more likely to appear in local results, which is why the Business Profile belongs in the plan from the start.
Your Business Profile is central to map visibility, and your website pages are what appear in web results. Our Google Business Profile management page covers the map side, and 5 strategies for Google Maps marketing lists what to do first.
What a local page needs on it
- The service and the city in the title, the headline and the first paragraph.
- A direct answer to the question, placed before any background.
- Details that only someone working in that market would know, such as local permit rules, the climate or how pricing differs by neighborhood. Add only what you can verify.
- Links to the related service page and to other pages on the same topic.
- A visible FAQ, because the same questions are what buyers ask on the phone.
- A name on the page, a phone number and one next step.
Link each blog post to a relevant service page, and link back from the service page when the post explains that service. Pages that nothing links to are easy for Google to miss.
If you serve Palm Beach County, our city pages show this layout for Boynton Beach, Delray Beach and Boca Raton.
Technical basics behind the pages
Content only ranks if Google can reach it. Check that each page loads fast on a phone and that the contact form works on a touchscreen. Make sure important pages appear in your sitemap. Keep your business name, your address and your phone number identical on your site and in every directory listing.
Structured data helps too. Google’s LocalBusiness documentation (updated September 8, 2026) says you can use it to tell Google about your hours and other details, and it lists name and address as the required properties for rich result eligibility. It helps Google read the page and does not guarantee a ranking.
Content and AI answers
When someone asks ChatGPT who to call, the business it names is the one that gets searched next. We do AI visibility alongside SEO, never instead of it.
BrightLocal’s study of local AI citations (August 26, 2026) found that Google Business Profile made up about 28.6% of the citations it collected from Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode and ChatGPT, and that Yelp was the source ChatGPT cited most. Keep your Business Profile accurate and publish useful local information, since AI tools cite both Business Profiles and websites.
On October 15, 2026, Komba Jiu Jitsu was the first recommendation on ChatGPT and Perplexity for a beginner looking for a jiu jitsu academy near Sunrise or Plantation, and second on Gemini for the best gym in Sunrise. Our AEO services page explains that work, and the free AI-visibility audit shows where your business appears today.
An order of work for a business starting from nothing
- Complete the Business Profile and make your business details match everywhere.
- Fix anything that keeps pages from loading or being crawled.
- Write the service and city pages that match buying searches.
- Add guides and cost pages for the questions customers ask before they call.
- Earn links from local sources, such as your chamber of commerce, local news sites and trade associations.
- Read Google Search Console and Google Analytics, keep what produces calls, and rewrite what does not.
Review the first pages in Search Console as you publish more. Nobody can give you a date for page 1. A promise of page 1 in 30 days for SEO should end the conversation.
What it costs
SEO costs $1,000 to $1,600 a month at baseline and about $3,500 at the top of competitive markets. Business Profile management runs $450 to $650 a month, and AEO runs $950 to $2,000 a month alongside SEO. Ad spend is paid to Google. Every service price sits on our pricing page, reviewed October 2026.
FAQ
What is the difference between content marketing and SEO for a local business?
Content marketing is the writing on your site. SEO is the groundwork that lets Google find that writing, understand it and rank it. Skip the writing and there is nothing to rank. Skip the groundwork and the writing stays hard to find.
Do I need a separate page for every city I serve?
Give a city its own page when you serve it and have something specific to say about it. A page that only swaps the city name teaches Google little. Include local detail you can verify, and link each city page to the matching service page. Cities you reach rarely can share one service-area page.
Should I fix my Google Business Profile or my website first?
Start with the Business Profile, since it is quick to complete and drives the map results. Then build the website pages that match buying searches. Google says complete and accurate profiles are more likely to appear in local results. The profile and the site support each other, so neither should wait for months.
How much do content marketing and SEO cost for a local business?
The price depends on how competitive your market is and how much work your site needs. Ad spend and website builds are billed separately from the monthly service. Each service has its own published range, and the pricing page lists them side by side so you can compare before you call.
How long before content and SEO bring in calls?
It depends on your competition, the condition of your site and how much you publish, so no provider can name a date. Google decides how fast a page ranks. Ask any provider to explain the pace for your market and to put what they expect in writing.
Does local content help my business appear in ChatGPT and Google AI answers?
It can, because AI tools draw on your site, your Business Profile and directories such as Yelp. Citations also change often, since eMarketer reported on April 2, 2026 that 40 to 60% of cited sources change month to month. Treat an AI mention as something you keep earning, and check it regularly.
