Google Ask Maps and Gemini: What Local Businesses Can Do

Ask Maps is a Gemini feature in Google Maps that answers conversational questions about places. Google says it draws on over 300 million places and reviews from more than 500 million contributors. Google documents no way to apply for, buy or control a spot in its answers. For local results generally, it advises a complete, accurate Business Profile.

Key takeaways

  • Google announced Ask Maps on March 12, 2026, starting in the U.S. and India on Android and iOS.
  • Google has published no explanation of how Ask Maps chooses businesses, and no page I read offers a way to pay for a place in its answers.
  • Google’s general local guidance covers accurate details and attributes, and its launch post names reviews as an input. Google has not explained how these affect Ask Maps answers.
  • Google’s AI calling feature comes with owner switches in your profile that are worth checking.
  • You can test your own Ask Maps results from a phone and repeat the check monthly.

What is Ask Maps and when did Google launch it?

Google announced Ask Maps on March 12, 2026, in a post by Google Maps VP Miriam Daniel. The post describes a conversational feature that answers complex place questions on a customized map.

Google says results draw on places a user has searched for or saved, so two people can get different answers to the same question. The launch post said desktop was “coming soon,” and Google’s Maps Help now documents a computer version too. Ask Maps follows an October 31, 2024 update that put Gemini in Maps “grounded in our trusted data about 250 million places.”

What has Google announced for Maps and Search, and when?

Google has introduced several Maps and Search features since October 2024 that touch a local business. The table gives the date of each.

The May 19 post says that for select categories such as home repair, beauty or pet care, users can ask Google to call businesses on their behalf. The August 6 update added food ordering with Square and Toast, and lets users suggest business edits by chat or by photographing a storefront sign.

What does Google say Ask Maps uses to answer?

Google’s launch post says Maps analyzes “information from over 300 million places,” including reviews from a community of more than 500 million contributors. Its India launch post adds insider tips from people and web content. Google’s Maps Help page (undated, read October 15, 2026) says answers include web links and warns that “AI-powered answers can sometimes be incorrect.”

Google has not published the factors that decide which businesses Ask Maps shows. Search Engine Journal (Matt G. Southern, June 8, 2026) reported the same gap. The experts it quotes describe a blend of listing data and web content, and the article calls ranking claims educated guesses.

Google’s Complete your Business Profile page (undated, read October 16, 2026) says: “Customers are 70% more likely to visit and 50% more likely to consider purchasing from businesses with a complete Business Profile.” It gives no method and does not mention Ask Maps.

PPC Land reported on April 24, 2026 that a Google newsletter dated April 9 warned outdated profiles are “invisible to these conversational queries.” I could not find that newsletter on a Google page, so treat the warning as reported.

Which Ask Maps claims has Google documented?

The first two rows come from general Business Profile guidance, and the table separates that from claims Google has not confirmed for Ask Maps.

  • Local ranking help. Google’s local ranking page (undated, read October 15, 2026) says complete and accurate information makes a business more likely to show in local results and that a better local ranking cannot be requested or bought. It does not mention Ask Maps.
  • Attributes help. Google’s attributes page says certain attributes can make a business appear in searches for places with them. It also does not mention Ask Maps, and some attributes come from customer input.
  • Performance help. The performance page lists profile views and customer actions such as calls. It names no Ask Maps metric.
  • Search Central. Google’s AI features page (last updated December 10, 2025) says a page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet, with “no additional technical requirements” for AI Overviews and AI Mode.

What should I fix on my Business Profile before customers ask Maps about me?

Google has not said whether a missing detail removes a business from an answer. My inference is that a question combining open now, outdoor seating and parking is easier to answer when each detail is filled in.

Check these items first:

  • Hours. Confirm regular hours and set special hours for holidays.
  • Attributes. Add the ones that apply, and check any Google filled in from customer input before customers rely on them.
  • Categories. Use the most specific primary category. Our guide to Google Maps marketing strategies explains the order of importance.
  • Reviews. Google names reviews as an input. Our Google reviews guide covers what is allowed.
  • Photos. Upload current photos of the entrance and your work. Whether Ask Maps reads them is unconfirmed, but customers will.
  • Website. Put prices and service details on indexed pages, since Maps has no field for every detail.

Our five signs checklist covers common profile errors, and the suspension guide covers removals.

How do I test what Ask Maps says about my business?

Use a phone, where the Maps Help page places Ask Maps under the search bar.

  1. Open Google Maps and tap Ask Maps.
  2. Ask a customer’s questions, such as “Which dentist near Boynton Beach is open Saturday?”
  3. Open the links for AI sources and note which pages Google used.
  4. Save the date, the question and a screenshot.
  5. Repeat monthly with the same questions.

Answers are personalized from places a user has searched or saved, so your phone may favor businesses you already visit. Ask a friend to run the same questions and compare.

Can I manage my Business Profile from Gemini?

Yes, with limits. Google’s Business Profile Help page on the Gemini web app (undated, read October 15, 2026) says a connected profile lets Gemini help change hours, draft review replies, create posts, summarize reviews and check performance. Google’s June 10, 2026 announcement set a global rollout for June 2026, excluding the EEA and UK.

Gemini here is a management tool, and no Google page I read says that connecting a profile changes how Ask Maps ranks your business. Review any reply Gemini drafts before it posts.

What happens when Google’s AI calls or books my business?

A Google Business Profile Help page (undated, read October 15, 2026) says Google “might contact your business on their behalf through an automated phone call.” Calls are monitored and recorded, and they are available only in the United States, except in five states the page names.

Google’s AI Mode help page on local availability and pricing says AI Mode searches the web first and calls when a business lacks online details. My inference is that publishing your prices and hours may reduce the calls your front desk takes, since Google does not say so.

You can opt out of the calls. Say “Please stop calling my business” during one, or open your profile, then More, Business Profile settings, Advanced settings, and review the switches under “Google automated calls and text messages.” Google notes you may still get occasional manual calls.

The August 6 update adds user-submitted edits, which Google says built-in protection systems review for accuracy. Check your hours and phone number monthly in case an accepted edit changed them.

Does my Business Profile affect Gemini and AI Mode answers?

Google’s AI features page recommends “checking that your Merchant Center and Business Profile information is up-to-date” among its general practices, and Ask Maps draws on Maps place data. Beyond that, I found no Google page that ties a profile to answers in the Gemini app or in AI Mode.

Our guide to getting recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews covers the study data on which sources AI answers cite. For how each engine picks sources, see how AI search engines choose their sources.

When is paid help with a Business Profile worth it?

Many owners finish the checklist in an afternoon. Help makes sense with several locations, a suspended profile, or no time for the monthly test. Google Business Profile management at Good At Marketing is $450 to $650 a month, and every price is on the pricing page. The cost side has its own guide: How much Google Business Profile management costs. Profile work supports the rest of how SEO works, and no one can promise a position in an AI answer.

FAQ

Is Ask Maps available outside the U.S. and India?

Yes. Google’s August 6, 2026 post says Ask Maps is rolling out in more countries, among them Canada and Australia, and in English across more than 150 countries and territories. Food ordering and chat-based edits were rolling out in the U.S. first, so a feature may not reach your city yet.

Can I pay to appear in Ask Maps answers?

Google documents no paid placement in Ask Maps. Its local ranking help says you cannot pay for a better local ranking, which describes ordinary local results. Search Engine Roundtable’s launch report (Glenn Gabe, March 12, 2026) said ads were absent from Ask Maps at launch. Check Google’s announcements, since that can change.

Does Ask Maps replace the Questions and Answers section on a profile?

In the pages I read, Google never calls Ask Maps a Q&A replacement. Its developer documentation says the Business Profile Q&A API was discontinued on November 3, 2025 (page last updated August 28, 2026). Mike Blumenthal of Near Media predicted a replacement in January 2025, and that is his opinion.

Can I remove my business from Ask Maps?

I found no Google setting that removes a business from Ask Maps answers. The only AI-related switches I found are the automated calls and text messages settings in the profile. If an answer shows wrong details, fix them at the source, and note that users can send feedback with the thumbs buttons Google describes.

Who can connect a Business Profile to the Gemini web app?

Google’s help page says you must own or manage only one verified profile, be 18 or older, use a personal Google Account and leave Keep Activity on. Work or school accounts are unsupported for now. PPC Land (August 7, 2026) reported that a Google newsletter relaxed the one-profile limit, so recheck.

What should I do if Ask Maps gets my business wrong?

Check whether the wrong detail appears in your profile, your website or the pages linked in the answer. Correct it there, reply to any review that repeats the wrong fact, and rerun your test questions after a few weeks. Our guide to fixing wrong information about your business in AI covers the wider steps.
